4 Ways of Making Thinking Visible
The idea of making thinking visible is central to the enterprise of creating a culture of thinking. After all, we recognize a culture of thinking when we are a member of a group where thinking is valued, visible, and actively promoted. The use of thinking routines has become a key tool for accomplishing this and learning to use these tools effectively is a key learning in our work. However, there are three other practices that both support and enhance the use of thinking routines: documentation, questioning, and listening. Our research (The Power of Making Thinking Visible) has shown that when teachers use these practices well, students not only develop as powerful thinkers and learners, but also excel academically.
